Gilberto freyre and the brazilian mestizo: the mulatto. Brazilian sociologist author of the master and the slaves, 1933. A dissident voice in the debates over the role of race in brazilian society. Futbol as a symbol and metaphor of brazilian society. Freyre"s suggestion of different styles of playing futbol. Europeans (whites) characterized by order, discipline, rationalism, etc. Dichotomy that is old and well known: emotional vs. rational. moral: disregard for boundaries (a lot of disorder is expected from a pibe) Being pibe is a gift, something you"re given, something you have since you are born. Pibes are kids, unpredictable, temperamental, capricious, but forgiveable and tolerable. Potrero (patch of waste ground in the city which has not been cemented yet, typical of low income neighborhoods) The potrero is the place where the pibes learn and practice futbol skills. It is also the masculine space for kids (where neither adult males or women are ever present)
