Adult human: more than 6 m. long, 2-3 cm. The small intestine is longer than the large intestine (4-5x longer) but has a smaller diameter. Inner surface area of about 550 m^2 (tennis court) 1) duodenum (0. 25 m) site of most digestion. 2) jejunum (2. 5 m) site of 90% of the absorption of nutrients. 3) ileum (3. 5 m) site of 90% of the absorption of nutrients. Pancreas produces the proteases trypsin & chymotrypsin, which are activated in the lumen of the duodenum. Pancreatic nuclease digests nucleic acids (mainly dna) Pancreas also produces bicarbonate (alkaline) & neutralizes the acidic chyme in the stomach. Bile salts facilitate digestion of fats & are a major component of bile. Bile is made in the liver & stored & concentrated in the gallbladder. Bile is also the route of excretion for bilirubin (waste product of breakdown of hemoglobin), a byproduct of red blood cell degradation. Gallbladder pumps bile into duodenum to digest fats.
