Document Summary

Sonic relationship between people and their spatial/sociocultural environments. A way of tuning into cultural context and interaction. Not just music itself, also context of music-making, listening production, consumption, circulation, etc. Not a single context- genres, subcultures, aesthetics, reinterpretations/remixes, histories, innovations. Way of life of a people; a complex whole . Includes behavior, ideas, and beliefs- not just culture as certain kinds of music, art, literature. Culture does not have intrinsic meaning- we interpret its signs and perform its rules (and regularly rewrite them) But not just a thing- a multi-directional process. The work of musiking (c. small) is part of culture- making and knowing. Its meaning depends on ever-changing interpretations in diverse contexts. Not just a singular expression but a symbolic field. Value depends on social and cultural factors; context . But: musical context is not always consistent as a system, especially not across cultures or even within them.
