PHIL 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: If And Only If
Lecture 5/9:
• Revising B1
o B1*- if X has right to life and X needs to hae Y to survive, and X has right to Y,
then it’s seriously immoral to deprive x of y
o B2- embryo needs to be in womb to survive
o B3- embryo has right to be in the womb
o A2- so if the embryo has right to life, then abortion is seriously immoral
• Argument for B3
o C1- mother freely chose to have sex and knew this could lead to pregnancy
o C2- if X freely chooses Y and X knows Y may lead to Z, then X consents to Z
o C3- so the mother consented to pregnancy
o C4- if so, embryo has right to be in womb
o B3- so embryo has right to be in womb
• Future like ours
o FLO is a future filled with valuable activities, projects, enjoyments, and
experiences
o Marquis- what makes killing a normal adult seriously immoral is that killing
deprives the victim of FLO
• Argument
o A1- killing x is seriously immoral iff killing X deprives X of FLO
▪ It is only seriously immoral to kill things with FLO
▪ It is always seriously immoral to kill things with FLO
o A2- killing embryo deprives it of FLO
o A3- so killing embryo is seriously immoral
• Revised argument
o A1*- killing x is seriously immoral if killing x deprives x of FLO
o A2- killing embryo deprives it of FLO
o A3- so it is seriously immoral to kill embryp
o B1- killing X is seriousy immoral if killing X deprives X of FLO and there are no
FLO-overriding factors for X
