PHIL 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Fetus
Document Summary
Main point: is to persuade weirob that life after death is possible (as in, there"s no contradiction in the notion) Our main point: to investigate the question of personal identity over time . Three views: soul theory, psychological continuity theory, and bodily continuity theory. You survive if and only if your soul survives. Substance: an object or a thing; something that has properties (trees, persons, books, cars, etc. ) Some substances are immaterial (god, souls), some are material (mollusks, trees) Properties: attributes, qualities; entities that can be predicated of substances (being red, being round, being personal, being heavy, etc. ) If the identity of persons consists in identity of souls, then judgment about persons are judgments of souls. We don"t identify and recognize people by their soul, but sameness of soul might still make it true that one person is identical to another. Psychological continuity theory: you are your psychology, a stream of consciousness (not some substance that underlies it).
