Major themes: rural vs. urban, east & west, traditional culture vs. westernization, autobiographical dimensions, the role of the intellectual. Zaynab: country scenes and morals (1913, by muhammad husayn haykal) Sometimes referred to as the first modern arabic novel: used as basis for first egyptian silent film, 1925. An early critique of many traditional social practices such as arranged marriages, the veil, and women"s lack of freedom of movement. Romantic novel involving zaynab, the beautiful peasant girl, and the three men who are in love with her: hamid, and effendi, landowner"s son, hassan, a well-to-do older peasant.
