Digital Media and Politics
- Digital Media played a huge role in the 2016 elections when Donald Trump got elected
president.
- Brexit Vote - June 2016: A very divisive issue. The vote breakdown was whether or not
the UK was going to stay in the European union. 48% voted to stay and 52% voted to
leave. Was leading up to the summer before the 2016 election. Before the Brexit Vote
went though, the traction that Trump was gaining was something Hillary did not do. This
made Trump’s existence be more noticeable.
- 2008 Campaign - Data and Targeting to mobilize vote: they use a data firm catalyst to
target specific voters. They were using this data for places like facebook, amazon, but at
the time in 2008, there weren’t a lot of networks because they were just starting to take
off. At the time they were just seen as just using this data to go and target voters. They
used this intervention of going out and mobilizing people. It’s just different from how it is
in 2008, 2012 and now.
- Atlantic Report on Obama’s Campaign; They contacted 49 million adults more
than 127 million times. Correlation does not imply causation. The republicans in
2004 had use some data to help them target voters and the democrats did not
use that.
- 2012 Election - Big Data to power community microtargeting and media outreach - This
was when facebook became big, in 2012. They were using digital Media and using
digital media content to target people to vote. In 2008, unless you had an iphone, you
would have not been able to watch this video (see video on lecture slides).
- Vertica was used to run data analysis
- 2016 Election and Digital Media: There were a lot of interceptions with the election and
digital media. The first couple of key intersections were not part of the campaign
strategy, they just happened to surface.
- Clinton Email - Allegedly leaked important emails to people who had no business
seeing those emails or having that information. In This whole scenario, there was
ultimately misuse of her email server. But they did not charge her because there
was not enough evidence that she did anything really wrong. This is also what
impacted the 2016 elections.
- Trump and Twitter - Trump’s use of twitter shocked a lot people. But Trump was
able to use that as a way to get more attention. No one knows. People are still
just gathering research and people are just starting to do more research. In the
few words Trump was able to spit out on twitter, he was able to get more press
coverage than Hillary with her emails. He is taking these conflicts and these
social issues and offers a very strong stance on them so he can get into these
spaces and get more attention. Trump was using twitter to connect in a very
personal way.
- WikiLeaks - an archive of different leaked information. Ran by Julian Assange.
WikiLeaks really targeted Clinton for most of the 2016 year. Released emails
from CLinton’s private email server in March. In July, released private emails
about Clinton in the DNC from a hacker tied to Russia. In October, they released
private emails from her aide John Podesta.
