Paul D Miller - DJ Spooky
Dadaism and collages- not only cutting up and sampling music and making something new with
it, it also stems from visual arts.
Collages
something that came out of europe in the 1920’s, a response to ww1. In ww1, it was
documented with photography and mss printed communications. You were getting printed
images and many people were seeing these images for the first time. It had a huge impact on
the views of civilization and society.
Dadaism grew out of some artists and theorists. They said that the war was built from the
culture and they wanted to break out of that culture. It was an artist movement. You have artists
that were tearing down some aspects of culture and putting them into light. In the 1920's the
idea of taking newspaper clipping and putting them together, they had a destructive aesthetic. It
was not common at all.
The idea of recontextualization and deconstruction. You’re cutting things, and cutting up words,
in some cases, and rearranging them into a new context.
Jazz as Remix
The idea of the foundations of hip hop that really embraced the idea of remix and sampling.
Jazz has also been seen as a form of remix. Rhythm, time and tempo influenced musical
traditions. It had social influences and the patterns could change based on live interactions. A
lot of the sound was coming from blues and was linked from different cultures and communities
throughout the united states. The idea of bringing technology together.
Contemporary Collage and Remix
What happens when you look at something from a different way? Taking two elements of digital
media and break it apart. When you break something apart, they still have some meanings
attached to each of the pieces. Putting those different meanings together can make a new
meaning with the old meanings still attached to it. You’re going to have different ways of seeing
some broad based imaged.
