Binary Data: Review
California is the first state to recognize non binary as a third gender. Changing things to include
more than one option affects the way you search things and the way you receive data.
Changing data structures is expensive. Binary structures are so ingrained in many of our
systems, it can influence our policies. It is very difficult to change these systems because of how
ingrained they are into our lives.
iPhone Wrap Up
Instead of replacing our phones every year, you could replace them every two years.
Understanding the resources that go into these phones can help influence your decision on
phone buying and has the potential to make your decisions more sustainable.
Thomas Thwaites- built a toaster from scratch
When you’re looking at the materials that go into these phones, you have to look at mining.
There are a lot of materials in iPhones that are really hard to recycle. Apple says that they really
want to be able to reach a point where they can use entirely recycled material, but they don’t
know how to do it yet.
Digital Video
iPhones made it able to make digital video more accessible and easier for people to do/use. It
makes it easier to take video and it is also more portable now than it was before. It is also easy
to distribute and view videos now than it was before because of YouTube, Vimeo, etc. There is
also the most recent ability to livestream just from your phone.
Video as media → Video as witness
-Journalism - Individual or community interactions
-Social practice/artistic practice -Focus on agents of state
-Information/communication
The Revolution WIll Not Be Televised was a song written by Gil Scott Heron, an R&B artist. You
have to change your mind before you change something else. You need to realize that you
need to be in sync with everyone in order to know what’s going on. The song also depicts how
there are people who decide what to put on the air.
Video As Media
You can have some good intentions and arguments but there will always be a counter argument
as to why video as media is not a good thing. The things that are being considered as a
videographer is identity protection and privacy, documentation vs entertainment, ownership/
authorship of video/images, implications and effects of documentation, and the videographer’s
position/participation/privilege.
