Algorithmic Bias
thinking about programs and about what an algorithm is.
An algorithm is basically a set of instructions.
Has an order.
And has a particular logic to it.
The people that is making this organization are basing their structure on assumptions. The
reason why they’re based on assumptions is so that they give their programs a guideline.
Database of people
Names
Gender
Address
Relationship status
Usually someone has to input the data. Queer marriage broke the system because they had all
the assumptions wrong. In traditional databases, there would always be a link. The reason why
there is algorithmic bias is because of the biased assumptions being made and encrypted into
the programs.
Filtering Search
You want the computer to do the least amount of work as possible. You’re trying to eliminate
any other outstanding variables not related to your research. As a traditional database
programer, you don't have the computer check every single outcome because, so instead you
set up a series of filters. Then it will only look for the people who are linked to the filters instead
of every single entry.
A lot of time, the interfaces are what is expressing the code beneath them. Essentially,
everything boils down to binary function.
iPhones
This is a device that kind of hard drives and facilitates a lot of digital media (photos, social
media, etc). The companies that run these different applications of digital media, there is this
assumption that they treat their employees really well, theryre liberal, artsy, etc.. almost has this
utopian facade to them. There is a lot of physical and manual labor that goes into digital media.
*something to think about* Do you think that all these digital media apps are flourishing bc of
these devices, or was the iphone successful bc of all these social media apps and people were
tired of looking at their desktops?
“Remembering the Apple Newton’s Prophetic Failure and Lasting Impact”
You’re not tied to a larger device by being able to use smartphones.
When Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone
