Introduction to the Cosmos
We have a short hand called powers of 10.

We Are Stardust
Every single atom in your body was manufactured by a star.
- Protein Molecules: Basic building blocks of life
- Earth and Sun: Home of C,N,O atoms from which these protein molecules were
assimilated.
- Supernova explosion injects complex elements into surrounding gas clouds.
- Galaxy: a large family of stars. On average, a typical galaxy has 10^12 stars. There are
more stars in a galaxy than there are grains of sand in all the beaches in the world.
Galaxies come in many different shapes and sizes
- Warped has dust (s shaped)
- Ring around a central fuzzy galaxy. A galaxy that passed throght the center of a different
galaxy.
- Fuzzy ball shape with dust
- Galaxies colliding
- Spiral galaxy with lots of dust (there are so many stars in the center that it glows brightly
and when you go out of the center there are less and less stars) The centers of galaxies
are called “bulges
The majority of galaxies are elliptical, not spiral. There are spirals, elliptical, transitional objects
Scattered in the galaxies, we have nurseries. It is a big star forming cloud forming from
supernova explosions. A cluster of brand new stars that are embedded into the clouds. The
clouds are a mix of dust and gas.

A cluster of brand new stars that are embedded into the clouds. The clouds are a mix of dust and gas. Nebula - a cloud of gas and dust. Into stars. (i dunno why that is caps locked)
