Fall of 1825 attended medical school in edinburgh. Revolted by medical procedures, his studies lapsed. Anesthesia had not been invented at this time, and patients were usually awake during surgery. Joined plinian society (natural history) and was mentored by robert grant. Spends summer on scottish coast (marine natural history) In 1827, darwin transferred to christ college, cambridge to become a parson. Mentored as a naturalist by john henslow. Darwin payed to sail for 5 years. Henslow gave darwin a copy of lyell"s principles of ecology. Darwin was seasick most of the trip and spent most of his time in bed reading the book. During 5 year voyage, darwin spent only 18 months on board, instead travelling over land. Observed a rich variety of geological features, fossils, and living organisms.
