Document Summary

Written in 1598, not performed until 1603. Shakespeare would demonstrate that the play took place in the forest by having people carry on twigs. Play is set in the forest to give it a sense of danger, the play includes snakes and a lion. May be an allusion to the story of the garden of eden, though the imagery is pagan (not discernibly catholic or protestant) Forest serves as a place of renewal as well as danger. Written mostly in blank verse, not a lot of rhyming. There is rhyming in adam"s speech promising orlando he will follow him. There is a caesura in the middle of the speech (a pause to break up the line) Sir rowland de boys has died before the events of the play, gives 100 crowns to orlando, his youngest son, gives the rest of his money to his eldest son, oliver.
