He was freud"s student influenced by german folklore and indian studies. Gave a more holistic idea of psyche. To jung, myths emerged from the unconscious and contained archaic truth about existence. Hero myth: where the hero"s struggle to overcome his fear and other obstacles to reach his goal. The hero: who pursues a great quest to realize his destiny. Uses of enchantment argues we need darkness of fairytales to represent evil in our lives. Fairytales with darkness of abandonment, death, witches, and injuries, allowed children to grapple with their fears in remote, symbolic terms which allow them to resolve conflicts within themselves. Fairytale tells the child not to shy away from difficulties, steadfastly meet the unexpected and often unjust hardships and at the end emerge victorious. Characters are typical, not unique (charming prince - lazy stepsister)
