Chapter 1: matter and measurements: chemistry: the study of nature, properties, and the transformations of matter, matter: the physical material that makes up the universe; anything that has mas or occupies space, matter is identified by properties. Properties: characteristics useful for identifying a substance. Size, color, temperature, chemical composition, chemical reactivity: physical change. A change that does not affect the chemical makeup. Does not result in the identity of the substance changing (can get it back: chemical change. Does change the chemical makeup of the substance. Requires quite a bit of manipulation to get the original substance back: solid, liquid, and gas. Solid: a substance that has a definite shape and volume. Liquid: has a definite volume, but changes shape to the container.
