Neurotransmitter three criteria: synthesis & storage in presynaptic neuron, precursors should be present in the appropriate places, enzymes involved in the process should be in the active form, enzymes should be localized to the appropriate compartment. Released by the terminal under normal conditions. Have a response in the postsynaptic terminal.
