Document Summary

Neural plate: going to turn in nervous system. Neural fold: ~3 weeks, plate folds in on itself. Neural tube: once completely folded, edges seal to make a tube. Going to become brain and spinal cord. Neural crest: becomes pns (where folds meet) Spinal bifida: occurs when neural folds fail to join, can see the nervous system from the outside. Neural tube develops in the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. Hollow center becomes ventricles and central canal. Asymmetrical division: stem cells divide into a stem cell and either a neuron or a glia cell. Radial glia help neurons find where to go/ guide them. Once in place, neurons begin to differentiate into cell type that they will become. Influenced by cell autonomous (genetic) and induction (environmental) factors, can"t have one without other. Competitive process to connect to post-synaptic cells. The axons in fetal cells are ciliated growth cones, cilia called filopodia.
