COGS 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Brainstem, Huntingtin, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Document Summary
Sleep disorders are among the most common health problems in america. Slow wave sleep happens after about an hour. While sleeping the brain switches in between rem and slow wave sleep. While in rem eeg waves are similar to those observed while awake. Trouble falling asleep or waking up from sleep. Sleep meds don"t allow for natural deep sleep. Narcolepsy - brain goes in and out of rem state. Consciousness is maintained primarily in the brain stem. Become sleepy because of circadian rhythm and how long we have been awake. Circadian rhythm is maintained by the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Homeostatic period responds to progressively longer periods of being awake by producing hormones to urge you to sleep. Atp is needed to produce adenosine which is essential for wakefulness. Atp levels soared during the initial hours of non rem sleep. Nothing can be done to slow the disease. Affects ability to walk think and talk. Symptoms involve jerking movements and mood swings.
