Document Summary

Individual cells communicate by contact and not continuity. Neurites of different cells fuse together to form a continuous reticulum. The cell body of a neuron contains organelles. The elementary functional unit of all tissues is the individual cell. The nissl stain (water soluble dye) will give you the cell body. It specifically stains the rough er: you only see the cell body, not the processes. Nucleus = "nut: center of the body. Axon = output: conducts information along the stem, myelin. Node of ranvier (spaces between the myelinated axon) Axon terminals (buton: synapse onto next dendrites of the next cell. The little sphines meet with the buton [tube with platforms: you can also have synapses of smooth dendrites. Red squigglies are action potentials: nodes of ranvier [saltatory conduction - conducts in a jumping-like fashion from node to node) Layer of gray matter: no myelin, lots of cell bodies, connections (synapses) Problems within the gray matter : trouble with the input.
