Start questioning how we learned what we have learned. Advertising perpetuates dominant gender, sexual and (racial) formations. That is what is most important to people, especially women, how they look. Ads surround us with socially constructed representations of ideal female beauty. Not even a model can fit society(cid:495)s standards. The dominant social construction of beauty is = (cid:498)young, thin, white(cid:499) - or at least light-skinned - perfectly groomed and polished, plucked and showed. Any deviation from this ideal is met with a lot of contempt and hostility. Be careful of saying that it(cid:495)s the fault of people above us. It is usually the people around us.
