Document Summary

Attitude of cynicism allows humans to create a safe distance between themselves and things that require emotional work. Cynicism perpetuates complacency with the system and creates consent. The attitude of cynicism is often portrayed on t. v. and fails to generate any counter-hegemonic ideology because t. v. requires the support of hegemonic systems. Kaufman looks at culture and mass media through 3 models to understand how consent is created. By adopting cynicism, kaufman suggests that all humans are corrupted by pessimism and aloofness. Propaganda defined by chomsky and herman is news/media system of power constituted by an elite consensus that is often internalized without awareness. Theoretical free press yet dissent is minimized and critiques that occur must occur within the confines dictated by the hegemony. Debates that challenge the system are not allowed. Heavy focus on elite, little focus on resistance. There could be sub hierarchies within this system of power. Suggestion that everyone is duped by mass media.
