Families were referred to as yangban families. Monopolized; own lots of slaves and were landlords. Similar to the samurai class of japan. Represented the people who had special social positions, specialist (ie. were lower than yangban but higher than commoners. Helped run the government but didn"t have the same benefits as yangban. Private schools/academies began to spread; some were ran by the government. Passing was not as difficult as china. Can be sold by their masters; no freedom.
