Slave vs planter vision post civil war. 1865: black codes passed to tie ex-slaves to the land. "epublican congress(cid:821)s own agenda: promote free labor. Had a "epublican congress that was united in belief: provide (cid:824)equal opportunities(cid:825) for education, equal rights, protect under law. Republican congress believed in wage system was implemented, country would be productive. Unwilling to confiscate land from masters and distribute to ex-slaves. Was contradictory because slaves didn"t want to work for their old masters again. Freedmen"s bureau supposed to help with this contradiction. All 3 positions struggle to dominate control. Sn: created colorblind democracy as a goal were actually committed to that. When republican congress took control of reconstruction, was good established new identity even with its limitations. By 1866: republicans in congress reorganized former confederates had retaken control of south. Congress horrified by black codes and leniency of president johnson because would have democrat power in south.
