❖ Cultural Changes
• Tanzimat Period is defined by:
o Foreign Political intervention
o Administrative Reforms
o Economic incorporation
• But also:
o A cultural revolution (maybe a limited one)
o A new type of knowledge based on European science and values
dominated every area
❖ The Dualism of the Tanzimat
• Sharia law vs. the Tanzimat codes
• Old sharia courts vs. the new nizamiye courts
o Didt eliiate the sharia courts but at the same time invested in more
western structured institutions
• Old literature vs. European literary forms
• Traditional social life centered around religious festivals vs. foreign influence in
social life.
o Bureaucrats adopted western languages and culture but were sort of
ostracized because people felt like they were mimicking a culture that
they didt really uderstad.
