Document Summary

Lifting up the shield, lifting up the future of rome. Compared to aeneas lifting his father - the past. Both rather nice, good, leaders of their people. Opponents of aeneas because he breaks up their marriages. Turnus is set aflame by the furies with rage. Love and passion of dido, and the outrage and fury of turnus. Aeneas faces external and internal obstacles (own internal desires/anger) Doesn"t do quite so well on the anger side. Does not remain in control of those feelings and kills turnus in a fit of wrath. Political government: establishment of roman law to rule the nations. Moral self-government: establishing rational rule of the emotions. When aeneas kills turnus, he acts on behalf of pallas for venegance. In effect he is burning with fury, acting like a fury. First and second half ends with the death of a young man.
