Ariel is non-human, a spirit, unknown gender, director"s choice. Sycarax, some sort of witch, caliban"s mother. Is the only female character in the play. Her name means wonderer , someone to be wondered at or someone who wonders. 3 years old when she arrives on the island, been on the island for 12 years, now 15- a marriageable age.
