Document Summary

Mmw 11- lecture 9 citizens, sexuality, and greek drama. Descended from moment of contact between god of the earth, athena, and hephaistos: born from the soil of athens. No one else could be citizens except those who were descended from myth. Women weren"t really citizens: mothers of citizens, wives of citizens, daughters of citizens, but not citizens themselves, did not participate in government. All citizens come together in assembly and vote. Lots of leisure for hegemonic (in power) class: allowed trade to be conducted by people from other greek cities (residents, not citizens) and slaves. Who should be a slave: not capable of thinking for themselves, everyone benefits from existence of slave class. Women: exclusion from citizenship of women, women should not be known, names should not be known for praise or for blame, women rarely came out in public. Funerals of soldier male relatives brought them out of the house: women should be invisible.
