Ananda is buddha"s chief disciple entrusted with transmission of all buddha"s teachings. Buddha"s nurse mother did much for him, so he feels guilty. Buddha does not want to put extra stress on ananda by rejecting him teaching her to not long for the inclusion of women (uses it as a teaching tool) (2) contentious acceptance of women into the sangha. Buddhism would fade almost completely from the country of its birth not seen much in india today.
