What is Gere?
o Genre can be thought of as a way of characterizing a group of works
based on common qualities and common histories
Many practices share a common history then split off from each
other
Musical Genres
o Tend to prize certain qualities and aspects of sound
Dubstep: Heavy, rhythmically complex synthesized basslines
R&B: Smooth, melismatic vocals
Hip Hop: Rhythmic interplay between vocals and samples,
idiosyncrasy of style
Classical: Huge dynamic rage
Indie Folk: storytelling, intimacy, proximity
