Nigeria:
Was a British Colony, got independence when many British colonies in Africa were getting
their independence from the British!
Civil war 1967-1970!
Alternating military juntas civilian government until 1999!
No “free and fair elections” until 2011. There was vote buying, intimidation till 2011. But it’s
still not free if the government ran all the media and there was constant propaganda being
played to the public, ensuring the civilians cannot make a fully informed decision. In 2011
there was Nigeria’s first free election.!

-President elected bu universal surage !
-Bicameral legislature, uniform upper house and proportional lower house by population !
-Supreme Court !

-Heavily influenced by British common law!
-Sharia law (primarily in the North which has a higher muslim population)!

Ruling party is the All Progressive Congress (Muhammadu Buhari)!
-Formed in 2013, came to power in 2015 elections. Control presidency, both houses and
large majority of states !
-Support is mostly in southwest!
-Predominantly muslim support !
-Leftist policies, parastalitism: state should control most of the industries in the economy !
-Socialist tendencies!
Opposition party : Peoples Democratic Party!
-Unprecedented peaceful transfer of power in 2013!
Both socially conservative!
