Document Summary

This is the core question of the field. Has both continuous and discontinuous aspects (stages) to it. Discontinuous: development progresses in universal stages of cognitive dev. Assimilation : taking a concept you already know, then adding objects to that concept. Short haired cat, fluffy cat, bald cat - are all types of cats. Accommodation : in order accommodate a piece of information, you have to change the scheme you are working with to accommodate the new piece of evidence. Now, a cat doesn"t just have 4 legs but also has to meow. Equilibration : finding a balance between incoming evidence and currently held-schemas about the world. Piaget"s 4 stages : sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, formal changes. At birth, the origins of cognition are minimal! Called this because infants only know the word through their senses and their actions (motor) No ability to represent absent objects until they are in front of them.
