Document Summary
This idea that you are a pretty good person can come from many different places: like roles, identities etc. When our self-integrity is threatened, it"s a very stressful experience: but we can be fairly resilient, undermines our ability to concentrate or perform. Study for values affirmation: heart of this stress in african americans. That they are reinforcing the stereotype and therefore a bad person: that this trouble isn"t what you are all about. The intervention group did much better: difference in white-americans and black is called racial- achievement gap, 6 yrs later. Suggests that the explanation of racial achievement gap is the stereotypes not the systemic race thing. Fixed mindset: goal- look smart, will lead to worse grades than grown mindsets. Study: the intelligence group did worse. So saying that one is smart caused it to be harder fixed mindset- makes people try less.
