PSYC 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Iron Eyes Cody, Factorial Experiment, Once Group
Document Summary
Conformity experiments: propel confirm to others who are present or by changing the object of judgment. Focus model of normative behavior- people likely to do what they think everyone else is doing (what is normative) if that has been made salient. Experiment: subjects in hospital parking lot- put flyers on everyone"s car and looked to see if they would throw them on ground or keep them. Put lots of flyers on floor to make this seem like the norm. Manipulated focus on norm by making it salient that people were littering or not (had a confederate walk by and litter vs not litter) Used a factorial design- 2 manipulations- norm and salience of norm (4groups) In a replication, single piece of trash on ground caused a decrease in littering behavior. Different from other experiments because there is no one else present and subtle but powerful pressure for uniformity.
