Document Summary

Learning as prep for retrieval, spreading activation, priming, explicit vs implicit, amnesia and episodic vs semantic memory. The best way to think about learning is as a preparation for retrieval . Your mind is trying to predict when you will need info again. As you encode your memory, you prepare it to be retrieved in certain situations. It wants the memory to be accessible at some times and not others. Our own memories are sometimes easier and harder to access, even for the same memory. Context dependent memory - deep sea divers . Had them learn words underwater or standing on a dock. Some were tested underwater, some were tested on the dock. Found that matching where you study and where you test should be the same for the best scores! The mood at learning and recall should be the same for best scores. People perform best when they smoke the same type of cigarette studying and testing.
