PSYC 154 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Impulsivity, Cognitive Therapy, Cognitive Restructuring
Document Summary
Used for depression and disorders that involve irrational thoughts. Person believes in contingencies that aren"t actually in place. Cognitive behavior- involves self-talk or imagined behavior, occurs covertly (difficult to quantify as a behavior); also called private events . When defining cognitive behavior, need to identify the occurrence of specific thoughts and images, identify specific cognitive behaviors not just labels for the behavior. Ex) i"m no good , nobody likes me , etc. instead of low-self esteem . Labels involve circular reasoning (behavior is given a label and then the label is used to explain the behavior) *labels are just names for behavior, cannot be the cause, actual causes are found in environment. Examples of behavioral excess (added behavior)- depression, obsessions/ruminations, fears/phobias, and worry. Examples of behavioral deficits (lack of behavior)- impulsivity, poor decision making/problem solving. A thought/image functions as a cs (conditioned stimulus) Ex- thoughts or images elicit anxiety, anger, sexual arousal.
