Background: 1890- cattell came up with concept of mental test . Created differential psychology- deals with how people vary. Psychologists want to figure out what is stable and what changes. Taxonomy (categorization) of abilities: fleishman"s taxonomy of 52 abilities which can be divided into 3 broad categories. Cognitive abilities- deal with thinking, processing, memory. Physical abilities- important for firefighters, construction worker. Definitional issues in intelligence: intelligence is a construct; it is something that we made up. Cognitive ability and mental ability refer to specific abilities such as memory or reasoning. Cognitive abilities: intelligence- refers to general intellectual capacity often called g (gma- general mental ability)- involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, comprehend complex ideas, and learn from experience. Gives ability to learn from experience (both on tasks and with people)
