PSYC 188 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Egosyntonic And Egodystonic, Anxiety Disorder, Dsm-5
Document Summary
Normal people: 6 easy steps to washing hands. Ocd people: a million steps until their hands start to flake. Compulsions : driven to perform repetitive ritualistic behaviors drive. To have ocd you need obsessions, compulsions, or both! ( so you don"t need both to have the ocd diagnosis ) Very unwanted: causes lots of anxiety and stress (ego-syntonic) Top obsessions : aggressive (gory images, killing), contamination (scared of germs), and symmetry/exactness. Top compulsions : checking (making sure your door is locked, but over and over), washing and cleaning, repeating. Time consuming obsessions/compulsions/both or cause significant distress or impairment. Good insight: people who understand their obsessions or compulsions aren"t normal, are self-aware but still can"t stop their obsessions and behaviors. Poor: individual things ocd beliefs are probably true. Absent insight/delusional: individual is completely convinced their obsessions/compulsions are totally true. Develos before the age of ten or early adulthood/late adolescence (earlier onset in boys, but more common in women)
