Document Summary

Structural and functional elements of the brain. Recall: outside more na+; inside cell more k+; resting potential -70 mv (cid:3247)chemical and electrical gradient pulls na+ in cell imbalance fixed with na+/k+ pump(cid:3248) Synapse: axon of one is connected to dendrite of another neuron. Nervous system has chain: sensory inter motor. Neurons mostly talk with chemical synapses (soup camp) Minority number of neurons do use electrical synapse: are fast, inflexible, and bidirectional. Synaptic cleft: gap found between neurons because using chemicals to talk mean neurons don"t actually touch each other. Loewi (1921): showed first evidence that neurons can communicate by releasing chemicals. 2 frog hearts; one with vagus nerve still attached. Fluid in heart changed heart rate of the other (liquid = acetylcholine) Stage 1: receiving a signal presynaptic neuron releases neurotransmitters into synaptic cleft. Presynaptic neuron has vesicles with neurotransmitter with ca2+ activated by action potential. Ca2+ vesicles binds to active zone in presynaptic membrane.
