Document Summary
Anthropologist elena padilla tells how much people know each other, who is to be trusted, who is not, who is competentand how all these things are known from the public life of sidewalk and its associated enterprises. Public character is anyone who is in frequent contact with a wide circle of people and who is sufficiently interested to make himself a public character. Sidewalk life arises out of no mysterious qualities or talents. A good city street reaches a marvel of balance between its people"s determination to have essential privacy and their simultaneous wishes for differing degrees of contact, enjoyment or help from people around. Cities like los angeles, chatham village in pittsburg lack means for bringing together necessary ideas, necessary enthusiasm, and money. The lack of sidewalk public contact and sidewalk public safety, and lack of togetherness is the problems of an unsuccessful city.
