Document Summary

Hellenistic influence on roman art and imperial roman art. Kings in the east were treated as near gods, and when the romans started conquering the east, they brought back this style. Heroism in statue (esp in the form of nudity) was strange to the romans. The romans thought it was weird esp because they got rid of their king decades ago. Not one person could claim credit and glory like that anymore. The breaking of the model of collective claiming of glory to the glorification of the individual directly led to the breakdown of the republic and the rise of the roman. Position of the statue makes it so that the statue looks like he"s addressing us. Shows the more traditional roman values of civic respectability and self control. The anatomical proportions of the statue are not true to life. The arm is meant to be a semaphore that calls focus to the subject of the statue.
