ANFS140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Cloaca, Gonad, Reproductive System
Document Summary
Common distal space for the digestive, urinary and reproductive tracts. The colorectum of the digestive tract empties into the coprodeum. The ureters (from the kidneys, no bladder) and the gonadal tubules (oviducts/ductus deferens) empties into the urodeum. The transverse slit found just ventral to the tail. Analogous to the mammalian anus (and urinary opening and vagina/penis) Mammals xx is female, xy is male. Avian zz is male, zw is female. Testes (2: l and r) the male gonad (produces spermatocytes) Located in the abdomen near the cranial poles of each kidney. Tunica albuginea thick white connective tissue that covers the testes. Epididymal duct connects testes to the ductus deferens. Much smaller than the mammalian epididymis straight tube. Does not have a head, body and tail. Ductus deferens tube that connects the epididymal duct to the urodeum. No accessory sex glands in the avian. Phallus male reproductive genitalia (analogous the penis), located in the cloaca.
