ANFS251 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Ovulation, Galactose, Nutrient Density
Document Summary
Continuous development and growth from birth of one generation to the birth of the next generation. Must provide optimum nutrient supply for each phase of the animal"s life. The suckling phase: demands an easily digestible diet, concentrated in high quality protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. Growth after weaning still requires a diet concentrated in protein, energy, vitamins and minerals. Requirements decrease per unit body mass and remain constant through most of adulthood. Pregnancy and lactation increase demand for all nutrients. The aging animal requires concentrated protein, energy, vitamins and minerals, but in lesser amounts. Each phase requires adjustment of diets and management. Time period for each phase depends on animal. Glucose is required energy source for brain immediately after growth to survive outside the mother and then for development and growth. Requirements of energy, amino acids, vitamins, minerals per unit body mass are higher for younger or smaller animals. Galactose converted back to glucose for the neonate to use.
