Helps animals to predict and control future events. Learning has occurred when an animal behaves in a more adaptive way because of experience. Discrimination between a large versus small reward (reward discrimination) After the first day (and initial experience), 90% of the birds chose the button that yielded the "big reward" or large amount of food. Learning rate was significantly influenced by size of reward. Large reward: birds took 3. 4 days to discriminate color with large reward. It helps us to determine what type of technical equipment animals can learn to use. It helps us to understand how animals learn and adapt to new environments and husbandry practices. It provides insights into the cognitive capabilities of an animal. Simplest kind of learning; learning not to respond to a stimulus. A decrease in an innate response caused by repeated presentations of the same stimulus. Ex) fear response and wind rustling in leaves.
