At the end of last class, i was trying to imagine what life might be like for a bride entering her husband"s patrilineal home and who she finds there: your mother-in-law probably doesn"t like you. She wants to control her son and that"s the man you married. He is her only insurance policy in that household the one thing that ties her to the patrilineage that she will never belong to. No you are a threat to her: the household group also will include your husband"s sisters, that is, all unmarried daughters of your husband"s patrilineage, are they your new friends and allies? not really. They haven"t had too much fun in this house either. Because although they belong to the patrilineage, everyone knows they are leaving it. Daughters are just temporary members of the household: they will move out when they marry.
