We are looking at the roots of a long tradition of traveling from america to europe to seek out opportunities to learn to paint, such as benjamin west. Why is this man important? o o o o. He becomes really well known as a teacher of other american artists. He opens up his home and studio to other colonial artists who want to follow in his footsteps. He passes on what he learns to other artists. He also becomes the first successful history painter in america. 18th c. artists knew that history painting was the key to being a legend . Ex patriot, teacher, history painter, and neo classicism master. Copley too, becomes an ex pat and never comes back to north. Coming back to this idea of west proposed by berkeley, west and copley moving east looks so odd. They do this because they knew the success wasn"t in america, it was in europe at the time.
