ARTH237 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Menri Monastery, Fierce Deities, Hanfu
Document Summary
Can be defined as a system of forms, can be studied as an approach to understanding art. Can be used to identify where and when a work was produced; and by looking at subtle developments in style, we can try to explain why changes, variations, or stability in style existed and what those patterns might mean. Example: contrasting styles and their sources for western tibet and eastern tibetan bronzes. Example of stylistic analysis: ideas of a modern tibetan painter, tsarak pema namdol thaye: Thaye describes elements he considers in distinguishing two styles of eastern tibetan paintings, menri and karma gadri. Found, along with substyles, in south-central and eastern tibet. Karma gadri: style of the karmapa encampments, developed in 16 century by painter, namkha th. Also found in both south-central and eastern tibet. Six distinguishing elements (as given by thaye): system of measurement used for primary deity figures.
