We learned that benjamin west was very welcoming of other artists and allows them to come into his home and study. We also learned that copley left boston for a couple reasons: 1) history painting > portraits: politically dicey situation between his patrons of boston fell into loyalists v. rebels. Copley had married into a loyalist family. o. These made stating in boston and being successful very hard so he went to london and met up with west. West tells copley that he needs to go to italy and study, so that"s what he does: he only stayed for a little while, but mastered neo classicism. Mr. and mrs. ralph also went on the grand tour and met up with copley and commissioned him to paint them. On a basic level, copley is still using his skills to make likeness. He also spends a lot of time reproducing materials.
