Lecture 9: Dilutions Practice
Growth Curve & Dilutions
• dilution of a solution or a cell suspension
o is a ratio that indicates proportion of more concentrated solution/suspension
and a diluent
o 1 can of concentrated orange extract mixed with 8 cans of water gives 1/9
dilution of orange juice
o 1/20 dilution is the same as 2x10-1 dilution
â–Ş 1 part mixed with 19 parts of solvent
o 1/100 dilution is the same as 10-2 dilution
o 1x10-3 dilution is the same as 1/1000 dilution
o 1/8 x 105 dilution is the same as 1/800,000 or 8 x 10-5 dilution
• Dilution factor
o Inverse of dilution
o Dilution factors have practical use when we have to calculate the volume of a
solution or the starting concentration/suspension of a solution
o 1/20 dilution is the same as 2x10-1 dilution
â–Ş Dilution factor = 20
o 1/100 dilution is the same as 10-2 dilution
â–Ş Dilution factor = 100
o 1x10-3 dilution is the same as 1/1000 dilution
â–Ş Dilution factor = 1000
o 1/8 x 105 dilution is the same as 1/800,000 or 8 x 10-5 dilution
â–Ş Dilution factor = 800,000 or 8 x 105

Not a dilution
o Stock bacterial culture is in tube #1. Determine dilution factor for tube #2. 1mL
of stock culture is added to 99 mL of liquid broth to make dilution in tube #2.
â–Ş 1 mL cell suspension mixed with 99 mL of solvent
â–Ş Dilution = 1:100
