Ear forms between 3-37 weeks of gestation. Only organ that does not grow after birth - complete adult size at birth. Cochlea is the size of a pea! Has representative tissue from all other body systems (cells that migrate to become the outer ear also migrate to become the kidney) *same basis. Sperm and egg combine at fertilization to form a single cell. Contains 46 chromosomes (23 from each parent) 22 sets are autosomal and 1 set determines gender (xx-girl, xy=boy) Large percentage of genetic material is redundant. Chromosomes live in the nucleus of each cell - smaller #, larger chromosome. 99% of our human dna is identical. Tightly packed strands of dna and proteins. Dna strands are made of 4 bases (chemicals) Bases always pairs with the same partner. A pairs with t, g pairs with c. Errors in the sequence of these bases cause genetic changes/errors. Sections of base pairs along a strand of dna.
