CGSC379 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Neuroplasticity, Differential Diagnosis, Evoked Potential
Document Summary
Peripheral hearing system fully formed at birth. Central auditory system continues to grow and mature from birth thru early adulthood. Brain can reorganize itself after trauma (at younger ages) Lack of auditory stimulation causes changes in central cell systems. Originally developed in 1950s to find tumors and other defects within the central auditory system for adults. Currently used to assess functional auditory processing skills of children validity/reliability is questionable. Many of the accommodations/supports mimic other areas of disability. No consensus on the definition of auditory processing disorders. No consensus on assessment and or treatment. Dysfunction in how the central nervous system uses sound/auditory information. Is a deficit in the perceptual processing of auditory stimuli; and the neurobiological activity that underlies that processing and gives rise to the electrophysiologic evoked potentials.
